A Playlist for Moving On

March 11, 2019

In my most recent post, I wrote: “I wish I could be one of those girls in a song about having a crazy night out with her girlfriends to forget her ex, and then *poof* ALL BETTER. But I’m not, and I never will be.”

It’s true. BUT, there are some really great songs by women artists about every stage of moving on, getting over it, and taking control that are worth celebrating. Even though it’s hard to picture myself in some of them, they’re still pretty empowering to listen to.

So I present to you You Can Get (Over) It: A Playlist for Moving On.

Click here or on the playlist below to listen to the playlist on Spotify.

From divas to pop princesses to indie darlings, here’s the playlist and some of my favorite lines from each song:

Good as Hell by Lizzo

Boss up and change your life / You can have it all, no sacrifice / I know he did you wrong, we can make it right / So go and let it all hang out tonight

Party for One by Carly Rae Jepsen

Party for one / If you don’t care about me, I’ll just dance for myself / Back on my beat

Shake It Out by Florence & The Machine

I’m always dragging that horse around / Our love is pastured, such a mournful sound / Tonight I’m gonna bury that horse in the ground

Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers

While you’re bleeding on your back in the glass, I’ll be glad that I made it out and sorry that it all went down like it did

Clean by Taylor Swift

That morning, gone was any trace of you / I think I am finally clean

Back in My Body by Maggie Rogers

Lost you in the morning, don’t live anywhere / I found myself when I was going everywhere

You’re Not the One by Sky Ferreira

Left unsatisfied / Won’t even bother to fight, I know you’re not the one / Guess you’re not the one

Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac

I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you / You will never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you

Every Time I Hear That Song by Brandi Carlisle

By the way, I forgive you / After all, maybe I should thank you for giving me what I’ve found / ‘Cause without you around, I’ve been doing just fine

Running If You Call My Name by HAIM

With my eyes closed, I see the door open wide / With my eyes closed, I’m leaving it all behind

Irreplaceable by Beyonce

Baby I won’t shed a tear for you / I won’t lose a wink of sleep / ‘Cause the truth of the matter is replacing you is so easy

Forgiveness by Paramore

You want forgiveness / I just can’t give you that / I just can’t do it yet

Leave a Trace by CHVRCHES

You think I’ll apologize for things I left behind, but you got it wrong / And I’m as sane as I ever was

Night Shift by Lucy Dacus

You got a 9-to-5, so I’ll take the night shift / And I’ll never see you again if I can help it / In five years I hope the songs feel like covers dedicated to new lovers

thank u, next by Ariana Grande

Thank u, next / I’m so f*cking grateful for my ex

You’re So Vain by Carly Simon

I bet you think this song is about you, don’t you?

I Almost Do by Taylor Swift

In my dreams you’re touching my face and asking me if I wanna try again with you / And I almost do

You Can Cry Tomorrow by Betty Who

Get outta your head, this isn’t the end / You took a hit, let’s burn his shit / Get off of the ledge, it’s time to pretend

Last One by The Aces

I’ve put your name into a million lines now, but this is the last one

Breakin’ Up by Rilo Kiley

Revenge is the saddest thing / Honey, I’m afraid to say you deserve everything

Boy Problems by Carly Rae Jepsen

I think I broke up with my boyfriend today, and I don’t really care / I’ve got worse problems

Truth Hurts by Lizzo

I put the “sing” in single / Ain’t worried ’bout a ring on my finger

Two Doors Down by Dolly Parton

‘Cause here I am no longer crying and feeling sorry / We’re having a party just two doors down

Walking Away by HAIM

You don’t wanna give, and you don’t wanna know how / If you were gonna change things, you would’ve by now

Lost by Natalie Prass

Though all the scars are healing, you’re always biting back / You know the struggle’s real when I lie down then you attack

Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson

I’m so moving on / Thanks to you, now I get what I want

You Are Free by Mates of State

Stop telling me the right way to go / I’m on my own / You’re selling our old ways

It’s Too Late by Carole King

Something inside has died / And I can’t hide, and I just can’t fake it

Best Thing I Never Had by Beyonce

Lord knows that it would take another place, another time, another world, another life / Thank God I found the good in goodbye

Begin Again by Taylor Swift

I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny ’cause he never did / I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end / But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again

Enjoy!

love, tara

oh, hello!

I’m Tara. I’m a single 30-something hot mess figuring out this awkward, beautiful, somewhere-in-between stage of life. My hope is that you will be encouraged by my mishaps and revelations and embrace whatever step of the journey you're in. No filters. No sugar-coating. Just a wholotta realness from my heart to yours.
